Carmaggendon no more– LA Metro has unveiled a series of environmentally-friendly transportation initiatives that strive to increase alternatives to single occupancy vehicles in order to drastically curb greenhouse emissions in Los Angeles. The plans, which are part of Mayor Eric Garcetti’s recently published Los Angeles Green New Deal, features numerous innovative updates to the LA Metro system that will make public transportation more accessible to all Los Angeles communities and neighborhoods. Among these plans include Measure M, an initiative that aims to expand light rail and subway lines to the furthest corners of Los Angeles County by 2028. The plan also calls for renovation projects such as LA Mas’ First/Last Mile, an initiative seeking to increase passenger’s safety and comfort through efforts to revitalize outlying Metro stations and their surrounding areas. “What about transportation to and from public transit?,” you may ask. In May 2019, LA Metro launched a plan for Electric Metro Bikes, an affordable bike-sharing alternative to driving or ride-sharing to and from public transportation stations. According to the LA Metro, 300 Electric Metro Bikes will be available for rent throughout LA city by the end of Summer 2019 with stations throughout Central and Downtown LA and as far as the Port of LA. These initiatives will work alongside LA Metro and LADOT’s vow to transition all LA public transit to electric or zero emissions vehicles by 2050. With all of these options and more alternatives to come, you too can be a part of the fight for a green and thriving future.
